Karachi, December 23: In a tense incident, law enforcement authorities thwarted a potentially catastrophic attack as they successfully neutralized an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden aboard the Awam Express at Cantonment Railway Station.

The explosive, contained in a black and red school bag, weighed a substantial 5 kilograms. Director General of Police (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza revealed that the bomb utilized 2 kilograms of explosives, featured a "time device," and employed a motorcycle battery for detonation.

Authorities believe the intended target was the north of Sindh, given that the bomb was timed to detonate at 12 pm on Friday, coinciding with the train's proximity to Sukkur-Rohri Junction.

Remarkably, the bomb failed to detonate as intended due to a malfunctioning wire. DIG Raza noted that the police were informed an hour after the train reached Cantt Station, with the report coming from vigilant railway staff.
